Casting Out Devils

Matt.16:17 – “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils”

(ICor. 10:20)  “But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.”  The word of God provides many warnings against fellowship with demons.  (Lev 17:7) “And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring.

This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.”  (Deut. 32:17) “They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.”  The people thought they were sacrificing to gods but in fact they were sacrificing to demons.  This is how the enemy works.

They will deceive many into thinking they are serving a god when in fact it is a demon.  There is only one God.  (Isa. 45:5) “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me.”

(Ps.36:32-39) “They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes: Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips. They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them:  But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.  Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.”  God refuses to let His worshippers to have any fellowship with devils.  (ICor.10:21) “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.”  There is no sitting on the fence with God.  Either with Him or you’re not!

(IITim.2:25-26) “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”  This probably has to do with heathen nations.  Especially at the time this was written.

The Roman Empire was widely involved in emperor or Caesar worship as well as Zeus and many others.  It is possible to recover people out of the snare of the devil through the preaching of the word of God.  A snare is a trap.  It is like a contraption you would set to catch a wild animal.  The animal thinks it is finding food but in reality, it is walking into a trap.  This is the manner in which demons deceive the whole world, Christians and non-Christians alike.

The enemy will fool them into thinking they will have pleasure.  He fools them into the belief that everything will be ok but in truth, they are caught in a snare.  The scripture states that the devil takes them captive at his own will.  So, demons can capture people at any time they want if that person is susceptible to their attacks.  We are not to be ignorant.  (IICor.2:11) “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”  Those that choose not to believe that this sort of thing exists will become captive by demons.

Another way that individuals are ensnared is through unforgiveness.  (IICor.2:10-11) “To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”  This is how many become demonized.

Demon possessed individuals have characteristics not unlike wild animals.  Such as writhing on the floor, acting like a snake with green foam coming out of the mouth.  I witnessed an individual once that acted like a wild man, throwing big men around like rag dolls with white foam coming out of his mouth.  He acted like a crazed animal.

Demons understand words spoken in faith.  Even if the person they possess doesn’t speak the language of the one speaking in faith.  Faith knows no language barriers.  Demons know many different languages.  One demon could be from Calcutta India and may have spent many hundreds of years there, and will often be able to speak the language of that region.  As well as other languages from various other regions that entity may have lived in.  This is why many demon-possessed individuals will have seemingly multiple personalities.  Many demons may inhabit them.  And many demons from different regions may inhabit them.

Demons will often let you know of their presence.  Many times they may just come out and say something like “There is nothing you can do to me.”  Or, “You have no power against me” or something like that.  Many times they will make themselves known to puff themselves up with pride.  And many times they will make themselves known to those that are anointed to see if you know that you are anointed.  They love to mock people of God.

Whenever I have fought demons, it was not me fighting the battle, but Christ in me.  I have never fought a person, in a battle, but fought the spirit that was in control of that person.  It is not a battle of human affairs.  It is a spiritual battle.

For the Christian, there is no reason to fear because we do not lose the battles.  No demon has ever sought to harm me or touch me, I have always been completely safe in dealing with the enemy.  Many house cleansings that I have performed were nothing at all like its occupants had described to me.  In many cases when I arrive, it is as if I must flick a fly off a table or something.  To those that do not know God or those who do not know who they are in God, the enemy can be very intimidating.  But, He who is in you is greater than He that is in the world.  (Zech.4:6)

It is always the Holy Spirit in me that fights the enemy, and the Holy Spirit always wins.  The Holy Spirit is more than a match for any demon.  (Mark 16:15-17) “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.”

(ITim.4:1) “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”  This was already a reality in Timothy’s day.  Because of all the pagan practices performed by the Roman Empire and the persecution inflicted on those that did not participate, many fell to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons.  As a result of this, many were held captive by Satan and fell away from the faith.  We cannot have both.

People who are bound by demon power cannot be set free by anything other than the power of the Holy Spirit.  Medical treatment won’t free them, counseling won’t free them, nor will philosophy or any treatment of men.  Only God’s power can set them free from demon power.  Period.

What Demons Look Like

(Rev.16:13-16) “And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.”

(Rev.9:1-11) “And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”

Demons have the appearance of men and beast mixed into their form.  The above description in Rev.9:1-11 is much like a centaur that is half man half horse.  I have seen many demons attached to people like parasites.  It amazes me that many look like the monsters we see in Hollywood movies.  Now we know where they get their inspiration.  It is the same in many of the heathen temples around the world that have weird carvings of strange creatures all over the place.  Demons have inspired the artistry.  In many cases, the carvings may be an accurate image of the actual spirit inhabiting the temple.

In many cases demons do not want to be known.  They don’t want people to understand how to deal with them.  That is why so many churches won’t deal with it.  They are scared and ignorant in the things of the spirit.  That is why they are dead and their church is dead spiritually.  They don’t have a clue how to deal with the enemy!  As a result of not dealing with their enemy, their church is dying.

Many times demon power can come off as religious in nature.  They can disrupt meetings by singing Hallelujah while you’re praying for someone, or speak out of turn while you are ministering.  Many times they will try to disrupt a meeting.

I have had individuals tell me of stories of large hairy beasts that have plagued their dreams at night as well as their thoughts.  I have had several people tell me that their kids have seen such a creature.  Dr. Lester Sumrall once dealt with a case where a girl was bitten by an unseen entity that was large and hairy.  The other was a little dwarf like man.  When she was set free, she grabbed at the entity and she passed out.

The people around her noticed her fist was clenched.  When they opened her hand, there was a wad of hair in her hand.  Upon examination of the wad of hair, no known creature matched it.  These things are not just spiritual, But physical in many cases.  These entities had bitten her from head to toe when there was nothing to be seen by the human eye.  I have seen scratches appear on individuals when there was nothing there.  Demons will always attack the person they target.

When we come against the enemy, it is always by the power of the Holy Spirit.  It cannot be us in any form.  If it is, we will see trouble.  (Acts 19:13-16) “Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”

In verse 13, we see the only place in the entire Bible where the word exorcist is used.  It means one who employs a formula of conjuration for expelling demons.  The word conjure means an incantation; magical charm.  The problem that these men faced was that they had no relationship with Jesus.  It states that they took upon them to call over to them which had evil spirits.  These men simply saw what Paul did and tried to duplicate it.  If Christ does not dwell within you, demons do not have to obey you.  (Luke 9:1)

“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.”  The authority to expel demons comes from Christ and it is given to His disciples.  It is for those who follow Him.  If you do not follow Him, do not attempt to cast out devils or the same thing that happened to the seven sons of sceva may happen to you.
When casting out demons, I am always bold.  (Prov.28:1) “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”

Pay attention to what the Holy Spirit says to you.  Many times He will speak to you things that will lead to the persons deliverance.  Every exorcism I have performed was instantaneous.  Just like in the bible.  I do not permit a spirit to speak.  Jesus never did except with the demoniac of Gadarene.  It seems that when we allow them to speak, it gives them a foothold, and we are trying to get information from a demon that lies.  We should be relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance not demons.  This can put the demon center stage and prolong a deliverance that should take much less time.  It is always best to stick with scripture. Jesus said we would cast out devils, not have conversations with them.

It is also a good idea to keep your bible handy as the Holy Spirit may give you a scripture to read to help the spirit to flow.  This may also give you strength.  (Mark 1:23-26) “And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.”

Notice that the spirit began to speak and Jesus tells it to hold its peace.  He did not permit it to speak and it came out instantly.  He spoke directly to the spirit.  He did not entertain it and didn’t let it have any control.  Shut up and come out!  That’s all there is to it.

Scripture states that those that believe will cast out devils.  (Mark 16:17) “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.”  Nowhere in scripture are we told to be afraid or to make sure we are protected or to place holy water on the demonized.  I have cast out devils when I did not even have my bible with me.  It is the Holy Spirit within that does the casting out.  We just give the command in faith.  Just cast them out.  There is nothing more that needs to be done.  Jesus did it with a word and so should we.
